My name is Rachel. I live in Trenton Michigan with my two children. My daughter is 8 and my son is 4.This is my 6th year in education. I started out in teaching Early Childhood and now I am at the high school level. I started the ASD program at the beginning of this year. I have 2 classes down! Honestly, I don’t know why I chose to go into this program. I don’t know much about it as this is only my third class. All I know is that it fascinates me. I love to learn how to help students. I currently work at charter school in Dearborn as the 9th grade Resource Room teacher. I have been there for 3 years. I do work with one student who is on the spectrum. He is very high functioning. Two things I would like to learn from this program are how to assess a student and how to make the transition into adulthood easier. If I can know and understand how to assess a student then I would be able to make the most reasonable accommodations. Also, since I work with high schoolers, I think it is important to know how to get them ready for “real life.” If anyone was thinking about going into the field of ASD I would tell them to get as much knowledge and understanding as possible. There is such a wide spectrum it will be changeling but worth it. And, to be patient!
