Behavior Strategies
Characteristics such as overly reactive senses, problems transitioning, a need for routine, and difficultly organizing themselves are common in people with autism. Children often have a difficult time controlling themselves because they don't know what to expect. Parents and teachers can alleviate the children's nerves by giving them coping mechanisms. It may seem that the child is acting out or not listening. But, you have to be careful. They may be trying to communicate their needs. For example if a student throws their art supplies off their desk it might not be because they don't want to work. It might be because of the way the glue or crafts feel to them. Using behavioral strategies will help the student learn to keep the outburst to a minimum.
