PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System)
This is a system used for students with minimal oral communication skills. Students learn how to approach an adult to exchange a picture for what they want. It is done in phases to help the student learn correctly. Two adults are needed: the prompter and the communicator. It is important to remember when working with a symbolic system, assessing the learner's knowledge of the symbols should be done regularly.
Teachers would benefit from this system the most but parents can use it as well. The pictures can be real photographs or symbols. Often teachers use www.mayer-johnson.com/boardmaker to help with making the pictures and cards.
