Token Economy System
This can be an important component of an intervention trying to decrease problem behaviors as well as increasing skills. Tokens or points can be given after the occurrence or replacement behaviors. The tokens can be given by the child themselves or others. There must be a clearly defined target behavior, back up reinforcers, data recording, and it must be consistent. Like with any strategy, the person doing the intervention should be properly trained. Again, it should be meaningful to the student. They have to buy into the reward otherwise the problem behavior will never decrease and the target behavior will never increase. In the book How to Use Token Economy and Point Systems, it shows parents and educators the best way to implement the system.
